Bhutan
The National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) is a government agency responsible for meteorological and hydrological services.Â
In Bhutan, despite modernizing their hydromet infrastructure, predicting flooding conditions remains challenging due to a lack of qualified professionals and decision support tools. However, there is hope on the horizon. GEOGLOWS, which provides free access to flood information, has partnered with local organizations to create customized web apps, as illustrated in the figure.
To ensure that the system is reliable and effective in reducing flood risk, the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) has evaluated the system's performance in major river basins and identified gauging sites for validation.
Moreover, the government agencies responsible for river infrastructure, hydropower, and disaster management in Bhutan have been collaborating with NCHM to enhance the system by sharing resources, data, and experiences. This joint effort is a positive step towards mitigating the impact of floods in Bhutan and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of its people.
